How to Get Rid of an Old Mattress in Durham Region
Mattresses are one of the most searched junk removal items in Ontario — and for good reason. They're bulky, awkward, and can't go in your regular garbage or curbside pickup. Here's every option available to you in Durham Region.
Why You Can't Just Put It at the Curb
Durham Region does not accept mattresses in regular garbage or bulk waste pickup. Mattresses are too large for standard collection and require special handling — including the recycling of steel springs, foam, and fabric.
Leaving a mattress at the curb is considered illegal dumping in Ontario and can result in fines.
Option 1: Mattress Recycling Programs (Free or Low Cost)
Ontario has several mattress recycling programs:
- Bye Bye Mattress (byebyemattress.com): A province-wide program that accepts mattresses at designated drop-off locations. Drop-off is free.
- Durham Region Waste Transfer Stations: Mattresses are accepted at Durham Region drop-off depots. There is a small per-item fee. Check the Region's website for current rates and hours.
Best for: People with a vehicle large enough to transport the mattress themselves.
Option 2: Donate It (If It's in Good Condition)
If your mattress is relatively clean and in decent shape (no stains, no structural damage, no bedbugs), some organizations accept mattress donations:
- Salvation Army: Accepts mattresses in good condition from some locations — call ahead.
- Facebook Marketplace / Kijiji: List it free. Many people will pick up a usable mattress within hours.
Best for: Mattresses less than 8–10 years old with no major wear.
Option 3: Hire a Junk Removal Company (Fastest)
If you don't have a vehicle, don't want to transport it yourself, or have multiple mattresses to remove, professional pickup is easiest.
